For once she could take her own comfort and style into consideration. And of course the huge difference being that she could dance with her friend freely and enjoy it without the expectation that it would lead to a marriageโฆ. โIโm looking forward to it! I-um-wellโฆ I never really got to properly enjoy that part of balls back home.โ Usually Mirandaโs experiences at balls ended in things going too well between her and a potential suitor, and then her finding some way to make herself appear unattractive to them -stepping on their feet while dancing, picking her nose in front of them, spilling somethingโฆ- and if that didnโt work, straight up running away. Hiding up in a tower or out in the swampy woods. Only to be severely scolded for it later.

It must be sonething about the expectations put on him, or rather, the expectations the druid put on himself. Onyx wants Miranda to have fun, he's just not sure he can provide the fun in the right amount. His first ball in a company of a friend, and not a future victim or an owner. The incubus better not screw it up! "Dancing is the best part of the event for me, and hopefully I'll be a decent partner for you. On the dance floor," the man corrects himself, returning back to his seat and picking up the cup. His tea is almost cold, and so, the druid magically heats up his palms to warm the liquid up again.

He has to bend over quite a lot to focus on what the girl is showing him on her phone. The gown Miranda picked is gorgeous and well-made, which the incubus comments on immediately, "Thatโs a lovely dress indeed. I think I'll be able to pick something to match it." What the druid means is that he'll create a suitable illusion of his suit. Hopefully, this fact shouldn't be clarified in public. Squinting at the screen to take in more details, Onyx notices the timer. The puzzles quickly assembles in his head, and the incubus glances at Miranda. It seems she's using an illusion spell herself to disguise the draconic parts of her body. Onyx wants to help, but he doesn't know to give the girl a sign without bringing attention to her issue.

Sometimes saying things without thinking can cause more harm than good. Breathing out, the druid turns back to Miranda, and speaks in a softer voice, "Rhodolite pink? Alright. I think burgundy color should go well with it. Any specific fabric you'll be using for the gown?" Discussing regular things distracts Onyx well from being put in a spotlight.

It's not necessary, but gentlemen often pick their suits to compliment the lady." The incubus speaks refined, but his poor heart is fluttering in his chest. It's the first time he's going to attend to a ball without a clear task given by authority, without the need to court anyone or do anything at all. Such freedom is somewhat terrifying.

In his experience, Valentine's Day ball is a place where young ladies and gentlemen are looking for future spouses, and those who already engaged or married, come to show off their social status. In the past, Onyx was a common guest of such events; he was either coming with a person who 'owned' him, or looked for an innocent victim to seduce. One can imagine what kind of associations Valentine's day is giving the druid. But now that he's a free man, Onyx can loosen up and try to look at this ball from a different perspective. He doesn't owe anyone anything. Not anymore. "I suppose people in this academy are too busy with everyday worries to spread baseless rumors about others. Perhaps you could ask a friend to escort you, yes," the incubus finally responds. He can't tell why saying this out loud makes him a bit nervous. Miranda has other friends besides him, surely. It doesn't mean she'd want someone like him to join her at the ball. "Do you have someone in mind?" The druid asks again carefully.

As much of a hopeless romantic as Miranda is -now that sheโs decided to not return home, therefore nullifying the possibility of being forced into an arranged marriage, a future that scares her so much- sheโs never had the opportunity to seek out a partner based on her own feelingsโฆ not thereโs ever been anyone that struck her fancy in such a manner. โHmm, I suppose that means I cant attend. He barely has any friends at the campus. Having a partner...it almost feels like a wishful thinking. Onyx isn't sure he'll ever find someone who he'd be able to trust enough to date. The risk of sharing his personal information is so high, and it will possibly endanger the other party too. "But, you say...You're going? Do you have someone specific in mind to escort you?" The incubus doesn't want to be too nosy, but his curiosity is too string. Miranda is a beautiful girl, the druid has no doubts he'll easily find herself a nice man. Getting along with a dragon is less of a problem than with a devil.

The music is pleasant enough for him to sway his head along with it, softly humming the tune. The incubus could've asked Miranda to dance with him the way Nimue just did, but the fact that all those people are going to watch them makes the druid uncomfortable. Dancing at the ball is one thing- nobody cares what a specific couple is doing-, but doing this in a tiny room surrounded by strangers - a whole nother story. Onyx doesn't try to pay too much attention to the girls talking; after all, eavesdropping is simply rude.

And yet, Nimue was smiling brightly, no care at all about looking silly in front of her royal friend. Perhaps it was a subtle encouragement to not be so formal around her. Her kingdom was realms away, at this point she was just a normal girl with a fancy upbringing.

However, when his attention finally returns to the board, he finds he cut the cheese in big, ugly chunks. So much for preaching... Blushing in embarrassment, the druid quietly puts the knife on the board and says softly, with a sheepish giggle leaving his chest, "Gods, I think all I do nowadays in this academy is making a fool of myself," there's a hint of desperation in Onyx' voice.

The princess decided to pour herself another cup of tea while waiting for the cheese to be sliced - hopefully one worth cutting your finger for. But it did leave Nimue with a realization. This party had no alcohol and yet someone got hurt... Was Strixhaven just cursed?

However, the sweet moment passes, and Onyx looks away quickly, suddenly acknowledging that there's quite a lot of people surrounding them. It's rude to stare at someone for so long, people might think there's an inappropriate reason behind his gift. "I'm glad you like it," Onyx repeats again, eyes focused on his full glass. "I'll wait for your review on the perfume."

When Miranda reveals her status, his panicked gaze darts to her, and then to Rosemary, trying to predict the girl's reaction. Her cheerful and supportive reaction, however, makes the incubus breathe out in relief. Wishing to disperse the awkward atmosphere, the druid points at the heart-shaped boxes lying on the bed, and utters, "Those are from me. I remember you saying you find such boxes...useful," Onyx says shyly, suddenly feeling unsure about his gift. His presents are very on the nose, and not quite original as glasses, or plush toys. "That one, the bigger one, has chocolate in it. Dark chocolate with salt caramel filling," the druid points at the red box. He did memorize what Miranda said back at the library. "And the other one has perfumes in it. I hope you'll like the smell. I tried to make it more...hm...delicate. You don't strike me as someone who likes wearing a heavy scent."

She brings over the simple, rectangular package she brought. It's heavy, the shape familiar to every university student. No, she didn't... "It's, erm, it's a book. It's the best monograph on the history of dragons in print, the best meaning not... hopelessly biased against them. I read the one in the library here, but I reckon ye'd like a copy of yer own, ye ken? Because..." She looks desperately at the dragon plushie, and then at Miranda. "Dragons have just as much depth of personality and individuality as anyone else. It's not fair to judge them all just because a few of 'em were proper bad 'uns. If ye don't mind me saying." She's a Lorehold student. Of course she brought a book. At least it's a beautiful one, A History of Dragons emblazoned in gold leaf across the spine, the cover a swirling mix of the colors of every major flight of chromatic and metallic dragon. (Gonna need you to have a bit of imagination there.) It's a beautifully made book, chosen with care and good intentions. Hopefully Miranda doesn't hate it.

Twenty two minutes left until she would need to cast the spell again... She shakes her head. Surely this was just a coincidence and she shouldn't read too much into it... Additionally, it would be quite embarrassing to have an outburst at her own birthday party... "This is lovely Otidea. You said your brother made it?" She holds up the plush similarly to how she held up the cheese momens earlier.

Inside her bright pink gift bag is a handmade plushie of a dragon that happens to be red, because there wasnโt any pink fabric at the store. She has enchanted it so that it always smells like roses and it is always slightly warm to the touch. She hasnโt quite figured out how to change colors, yetโฆ so the dragon is indeed red. A coincidence. โItโs not much,โ she admits, suddenly feeling a little strange about giving royalty a handmade gift. โBut my brother made it. He likes making little crafts like this! And I thoughtโฆ Wellโฆ Itโs nice to see yourself in something cute like this!โ She gets people seeing her and thinking sheโs a scary beast. Otidea figures whenever Miranda finds out how to be a dragon again (because she doesnโt know that she already partially transformed), she might think she looks scary, but seeing herself in a plushie form might help with that. A reminder that even as a dragon, she can be cute. Otidea is not really considering the possibility that not everyone present at the party would know Mirandaโs secret. Oops.

But now that he's "out of role", Onyx feels too timid to approach anyone. And so, he simply stays in place, waiting for his gift being opened.

Somehow I thought it's a champagne, and I'm not much of a drinker. But since it's non-alcoholic, I'll give it a try. She also dresses a lot nicer than Alvie usually does. Still, she managed to dig out a simple dress in a pale rose that doesnโt clash too horribly with her hair, actually down and brushed for once instead of in a messy braid to keep it out of the way. She sets down her gift, wrapped in perfectly normal paper from the shop she got it in, and, she now realizes, _not pink_, but instead an inoffensive shade of sage green. Iโm so stupid. โHello to ye, Miranda. Happy birthday,โ she congratulates her weakly. The girl looks like she wants to hide. Maybe sink into the walls. He's wearing a pastel-colored sweater and pink trousers - yet another illusion to make people think he has a lot of clothes in his wardrobe. In his arms, there are two boxes stacked one onto another, both heart-shaped. They look small in incubus' large hands, and the man tries not to grip them too tightly to not leave the claw imprints on the delicate cover. Noticing a small group of people gathered by Miranda's door, Onyx pauses in uncertainty. Right, people invite guests to their birthday party, several guests usually. Why is he suddenly surprised that this is the case with Miranda's gathering? Why should he feel so timid and anxious around strangers? Everything is going to be fine, he just needs to watch his attitude. Approaching the door, Onyx looks over the crowd, trying to recognize at least someone. There's Otidea, cheerful as ever. Hopefully, she wonโt ask about the incubus' sudden dissapearing during the firework event. And then, there's this girl from presidential debate. Onyx thinks her name is Nimue. The third girl, however, is unknown to the man. Taking a deep breath, the incubus decides to speak up at last. He smiles at Miranda and utters, "Hello. Happy birthday, Miranda. Thank you for inviting me, it means a lot." Then, taking a moment to appreciate the girl's outfit, he adds, "You're looking wonderful today," Onyx's tone is respectful and calm. It does not elude him that Miranda is having a disguise on her, but he won't mention it in front of the other people. Who knows, maybe they aren't aware of the girl's heritage, and the druid swore to keep her secret.

For the required (she thinks, because Nimue always seems like sheโs right) pink fit, sheโs wearing a matching denim jacket and pants combo that she had Nimue enchant to be a bright shade of pink thatโs very atypical for her to wear. The crop top underneath her jacket is also a bright pink with a repeating heart print all over it. She was aware Rue would be there, and that things might get weird, but she wanted to push through it for her friend and for herself. Itโs not realistic for them to avoid each other when they are in a lot of the same friend groups, after all. In her hand is a bright pink gift bag with a matching bow. Otidea is actually really digging all this pink stuff, despite how much she feels it clashes with her skin tone. Going outside of her comfort zone is just plain fun, she thinks. โHappy fucking birthday!โ she greets, unashamed of her Oti-typical language.

She felt like a clown purchasing the wrapping at the bookstore, but itโs what Miranda likes, so who is she to say no? Mercifully the thriftstore in town had a pair of pink dungarees in her size, so she didnโt have to stoop to a dress. Thereโs only so much femininity she can handle at once. She feels like sheโs too early. But Mirandaโs room is just down the hall. And her motherโs voice picks at her brain. Irritated to no end with her wood elf fatherโs lax approach to conventions like time, she had drilled into Rueโs skull that to be late is to be rude. But at least Nimue is there. Thank the gods. If sheโs early, at least sheโs not alone.

Its the day of Mirandaโs birthday and the sorcerer has spared no expense in her party preparations. On one table is a lavish โchampagneโ tower, sparkling glasses stacked in an intricate pyramid. But anyone expecting actual champagne will be disappointed to find out itโs actually full of sparkling cider. Because Miranda thinks champagne tastes bad, and why spend all that money on something that doesnโt even taste good? On another table is a two-tiered birthday cake. A heart-shaped creation with smooth pink frosting and delicate white floral piping. Finally, on the main dining table, there are lush charcuterie boards offering an array of gourmet cheeses, fresh fruits, delicate pastries, and vibrant dips, all artfully arranged. The drinks are all various shades of pink in elegant crystal glasses, some topped with delicate cotton candy that melts slowly into the beverages. Each guest's place is set with heart-shaped tea cups, daintily placed on saucers, accompanied by perfectly folded napkins.

She gets more and more upset with every glimpse of herself she catches in the mirror so eventually she covers it with a blanket. She tries to do the things she normally does. Take a bath, put on comfortable pajamas, eat some chocolate, and watch a movie. But sheโs so stressed she canโt enjoy any of it. When one movie ends she starts another, to try and keep her attention on the screen instead of her thoughts, and then another, until eventually she finally falls asleep.

The fears that Professor Elemmรญrรซ had placated earlier, come rushing back the longer she stares down the red woman in the mirror. The woman in the portrait is Miranda Pellington, the woman in the mirror is Rathrethnyth Pelliance Miruthulaa. Miranda falls to her knees in front of the mirror, raising up a clawed hand to stroke the glass in front of her. โI was beautifulโฆโ Theres a tremble in her voice as she talks to her reflection. โAnd now Iโm thisโฆโ The longer she lingers on her reflection the more she gets into her own head. Now sheโs second guessing her decision, but it was too late. She couldnโt undo it. Then a new, more chilling realization hits her. She canโt return home now. If she did, the elders would likely clock immediately that she had her curse lifted. Even she couldnโt predict what would happen to her, what would be done to her, should she try to return home. No one else, to her knowledge had done what she did. As the panic sets it more she decides to do what she does best. She opens the shopping app on her phone and just starts throwing things in her cart. Money isnโt a problem. Anything she can find to disguise herself. Sunglasses, balaclavas, surgical masks, gloves, long skirts, baggy sweatersโฆ but itโs not enoughโฆ
Miranda silently enters her dorm. She quickly runs across the room to draw shut the curtains. Downside of living on the first floor, someone could very easily see into her room. Despite walking back to her room with her new form out and proud, her paranoia was already starting to set in again As she turns back around she screams and jumps. Startled by her own reflection in the mirror. Slowly, she approaches the reflective glass pane that is so decoratively framed on the wall. A mirror sheโs looked in dozens of times to try on clothes, do her make up, take selfies and pick herself apart in. Apprehensively, she raises her gaze to face her reflection. She had been excited to see her draconic form in Professor Elemmรญrรซโs mirror image of her, back at the stadium. But seeing her reflection again now, in this mundane mirror on her wall was different. Miranda glances off to the side of the mirror and a large portrait of herself catches her attention. A portrait taken of her in her human form. A form she was starting to feel she had taken for granted. Or perhaps she made the mistake of getting too comfortable in her human form. After all, that form wasnโt really her, it was a facade, a disguise. She looks up at the framed picture on the wall and then back at the monster looking back at her in the mirror. The real her. Miranda laments as she looks up at the portrait. Her human form was gorgeous, flawless even. Her tan skin, once silky smooth; now deckled with red scales. Her once brown eyes, like pools of melted chocolate; now replaced with a glowing gold, piercing and snakelike.

01/07/2025 at 20:04:11 CSTIts a beautiful dress, but unfortunately the tight form-fittingness of it takes her back to her awful memories of being all dressed up in gowns she could barely breathe in, chosen for her by her mother. Being awkwardly presented to potential suitors, and then running off to hide from them as soon as she caught a moment to slip away. Her elder cousins being married off, one by one to fiancรฉs they barely knew, and the fear that she would be next. Hastily scanning the pile of clothing on the floor her eyes land on a chunky knit sweater. She yanks it up out of the pile and pulls it over her head on top of the dress. Turning to look at her reflection once more, she lets out an exhale of relief. So much better! Nothing to be perceived now, just a big cozy shape. Well, this was how she was going to have to wear it if she even decided to. But she would likely just hang it in her closet and graze her hand over the soft silky fabric when picking her outfit for the day, but never take it out and put it on again.

Picking a dress up off the pile of pink garments, she slips the silky material over her head, straightening out any wrinkles in the fabric with her warm hands as the dress floats down over her body. Her human form, the only version of herself she had any recollection of having. Of courseโฆ she had the ability to shapeshift in theory, but no matter how hard she tried to will it she just couldnโt do it. She straightens her posture and holds in her breath as she pulls taut the laces of the dress, tying them in a perfect bow at the small of her back. This dress really accentuates her bosom WAY more than she expected it to. She tries to pull the top of the dress higher for more coverage, it budges a little, if anything only pushing her breasts up in the dress even more. To any onlooker with a brain, Miranda looks breathtaking in this dress. But she does not see herself as such. She sighs before trying to yank the dress up more to no avail. Miranda would never comment or even think twice if she saw another woman of her stature wearing such a dress, but seeing it on herself makes her feel weird, attention seekingโฆ embarrassed even. As she cringes at her reflection she thinks about how absolutely mortified she would be if anyone perceived her wearing this dress. Is it normal to blush while staring at your own reflection? She crosses her arms over her chest and slouches a bit before hearing the echoed voices of her elders in her head, โA lady does not slouch Mirandaโฆโ She immediately straightens back up.

Despite the dorm's humble size (compared to what she's used to), Miranda has made the space uniquely her own. This room is sickeningly pink, and it's clear this girl comes from money. The decor style is a blend of old-money luxury, magical allure, swampy mystique, and personal flair. Between the lacy pillows, lacy curtains, plush blankets and velvet furniture, the room feels almost too girly, but Miranda wouldnโt have it any other way. It smellsโฆ magically swampy in here, a weird ode to her home. Around the room are very formal family photos with all her many many relatives posed stoically together.
